About the temple
The presiding deity of Kullu valley. The idol of Raghunathji was brought from Ayodhya in the 17th century by Raja Jagat Singh as an act of penance, after which the king dedicated his entire kingdom to Lord Rama — making Kullu the only kingdom in India to be ruled in the name of the deity.
Significance
Raghunathji is considered the rightful king of Kullu. The famous Kullu Dussehra begins only when his chariot is pulled — no other deity moves until then.
History & legend
After accidentally insulting a Brahmin who took his own life, Raja Jagat Singh fell gravely ill. On a sage's advice he sent Damodar Das to Ayodhya to bring an idol of Raghunathji, and on its installation in 1660 the king recovered. He renounced the throne in favour of the deity and ruled only as Lord Rama's regent.
