About the temple
Manu Temple in Old Manali is one of the most uniquely significant temples in India — it is believed to be the only temple in the world dedicated to Sage Manu, the first man and progenitor of the human race according to Hindu cosmology. Perched on a hillside above the charming Old Manali village, accessible by a short but steep walk through cedar and apple trees, the temple is both a pilgrimage site and a deeply philosophical destination.
Significance
Manu is revered in Hinduism as the author of Manusmriti and the ancestor of all human beings. According to legend, Sage Manu meditated in this spot after surviving the great deluge (corresponding to the Noah's Ark narrative in Abrahamic traditions), making Manali (Manu-Alaya — 'abode of Manu') one of humanity's conceptual birthplaces.
History & legend
The site's association with Sage Manu is ancient and pre-dates written history. Old Manali was a sacred grove where the sage is said to have performed his meditation. The current wooden pagoda temple was built and maintained by the Old Manali village community. It withstood the devastating 1905 earthquake thanks to the flexible wooden construction technique.

How to reach
Old Manali is 2 km from Manali town centre, across the Manalsu Nala. Walk or take a taxi to Old Manali village, then walk uphill for 10–15 minutes through the village lanes. A taxi can get you to the base of the hill. Manali is 45 km north of Kullu (90 minutes by road).
