Laxmi Narayan Temple in Sultanpur is the most accessible major temple in Kullu town, dedicated to the divine couple Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi. The temple sits at the heart of the old town and serves as the spiritual anchor for the local community. Its shikhara tower rises above the surrounding rooftops, making it a landmark visible from across the valley.

Significance

The temple represents the Vaishnava tradition in the Kullu Valley, a region more commonly associated with Shaivite and Shakta shrines. Its presence reflects the syncretic nature of Himachali Hinduism and its importance as a daily puja centre for thousands of Kullu residents.

History & legend

Records suggest the original structure dates to the medieval period when Kullu's ruling families patronised multiple religious traditions. The temple was renovated by the Kullu royal family in the 18th century. It survived the severe 1905 Kangra earthquake with only minor damage and has since been maintained by the local temple trust.
