About the temple

Khokhan Shri Adi Brahma Mandir is one of the rarest temples in India dedicated to Lord Brahma, the Creator of the universe. Brahma temples are extremely uncommon across the subcontinent — only a handful exist, making Khokhan a place of exceptional theological significance. The temple sits in the tranquil village of Khokhan, surrounded by apple orchards and pine forests south of Kullu.

Significance

The scarcity of Brahma temples in India (attributed to a curse by Sage Bhrigu) makes Khokhan one of only two or three significant Brahma shrines in northern India. Pilgrims travel specifically to seek Brahma's blessings for knowledge, creativity, and cosmic understanding.

History & legend

Local oral tradition places the temple's origin in the Treta Yuga, though the current stone structure is medieval in origin. The temple is managed by the local village panchayat and the hereditary pujari family who trace their lineage back several centuries. It gained wider attention in the 21st century after being featured in regional travel journals.

How to reach

Khokhan is 14 km south of Kullu on the Kullu–Mandi highway. Take any Mandi-bound bus and alight at the Khokhan turn. The temple is a 10-minute walk from the main road. Taxis from Kullu take 25 minutes.
