About the temple
The Gauri Shankar Temple in Naggar is a 12th-century Shaivite shrine considered one of the oldest and most historically significant temples in the Kullu Valley. The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and his consort Parvati (Gauri), represented together as the divine couple who embody the cosmic balance of masculine and feminine energy. The domed stone structure features some of the finest medieval temple carvings in the region.
Significance
As one of the oldest active temples in Naggar, Gauri Shankar is central to the cultural and religious identity of the town. It predates most other structures in the area and provides a direct link to the medieval Hindu kingdom that ruled from Naggar before the capital shifted to Sultanpur Kullu.
History & legend
Inscriptions and architectural analysis place the original structure in the 12th century CE, during a period when the Kullu kings ruled from Naggar Fort. The temple was patronised by successive rulers who added successive layers of sculpture and ornamentation. The current domed superstructure is largely original, making it a rare surviving example of medieval Himachali stone temple art.

The temple is on Naggar Castle Road, approximately 800 m uphill from Naggar village. Walk from the village in 20 minutes or take a taxi. Naggar is 32 km from Kullu and 13 km south of Manali.
