About the temple
Basheshwar Mahadev Temple in Bajaura is widely regarded as one of the most architecturally significant Hindu temples in Himachal Pradesh. Built in the Pratihara Nagara style, the temple's exterior is covered in extraordinary stone carvings depicting deities, celestial dancers, erotic motifs, and narrative panels from the Puranas. It has been under Archaeological Survey of India protection since 1915.
Significance
The temple is a Grade I heritage monument and represents the pinnacle of medieval north Indian temple art in the Himalayan region. Its carvings are compared to those of Khajuraho for their artistry and range of subjects, earning it the sobriquet 'mini-Khajuraho of the Kullu Valley.'
History & legend
The temple was constructed by the Pratihara rulers in the 7th–8th century CE, during a period of intense artistic patronage across northern India. Subsequent Rajput rulers of Kullu expanded and maintained the complex. The ASI undertook major conservation work in the 20th century after the 1905 earthquake caused partial damage to the superstructure.

How to reach
Bajaura is on the Kullu–Manali National Highway (NH3), 23 km north of Kullu and 10 km south of Bhuntar Airport. All buses between Kullu and Manali stop at Bajaura. The temple is 500 m from the highway. Taxis from Kullu take 35 minutes.
